I can laugh about it now, but I wasn’t laughing a couple of weeks ago when the pipes burst. I’d guessed we’d frozen up during the cold snap when all the water went off upstairs, but we weren’t expecting later that afternoon to find a ten foot hole in the kitchen ceiling with a load of water pouring through it. Apart from all the great chunks of plasterboard everywhere, it was the fact that the water was pouring down directly on top of my laptop that particularly caught my attention…
Well anyway, it seems my laptop bag is more watertight than anyone could possibly hope for, and the Macbook Pro survived. Some papers just beneath it in the bag had started to go a bit soggy, but the machine itself was dry as a bone.

Here’s a kind of reconstruction taken a few days later, so most of the mess is cleared away, but it should give an idea of how things were.
So there we are, we had a lucky escape – particularly as no-one was standing underneath the ceiling when it came down. Waterlogged plasterboard is heavy. And I guess my Tesco laptop bag is pretty well padded too.
