No, not the Brexit referendum (that was more like a 50:50 split, right?). No, I’m thinking about the 1997 General Election, when Labour swept to power with a massive landslide victory. I can remember for a few fleeting moments there was a genuine feeling of national optimism in the air. Everyone really seemed to get into the spirit of things. It didn’t last long, but hey ho.

Fun fact: In 1997 the Referendum Party campaigned for a referendum on whether Britain should leave the European Union. They stood for election in 547 seats and won none of them.
