How this font was made

Nine different uppercase and twenty lowercase characters appear in the inscription of the 'Doors of Durin' illustration from the Lord of the RIngs. So these characters were easily re-drawn (from scratch, by hand) in Illustrator, and then repeatedly modified to get reasonably consistent shapes and heights. The final weights vary a little and overall are heavier than the original inspiration.

The remaining characters, numbers, punctuation marks were all built entirely from scratch - a few ideas were inspired by other surviving examples of Tolkien's own writing. The whole lot was then taken into a font editing program where many further modifications were made.

I've tried to adjust the widths by hand to achieve a reasonably pleasing result without kerning pairs. The paragraph example to the left is unkerned.
